The early history

The warming effect of the Gulf stream brought about the emergence of the Norwegians from the last Ice Age. It is said that from around 12,000 BC the glacial land became habitable.

The thrones of both Norway and Denmark were inherited by Olaf Haakonsson in 1380, creating a union between both countries to create a political alliance and bringing an end to the wars they both had.

The Kalmar Union was created between Norway, Denmark, and Sweden 17 years later. Although the ruling Margaret I pursued a centralizing policy that favored Denmark’s greater population, Norway was too weak economically to pull out of the Union.

Olav Engelbrektsson led the Catholic resistance within Norway but found little support. Lutheranism, now introduced as Christian III demoted Norway to the status of a Danish province, and introduced the Danish written language, although Norwegian dialects remained in place.

Staying In Norway Without A Visa

There are countries that are exempted to apply for a visa, these countries are allowed to stay in Norway for up to 90 days without applying for a visa. However, you are not allowed to seek any work or gain any form of employment.

Types of Norwegian Visas

The types of visas for Norway include:

• Norway Schengen Visa (Tourist Visa).  This type of visa is for applicants who intend to have a short stay in Norway, the duration usually being less than 90 days. Applicants traveling for sightseeing, family visits, and business fall under this category.
• Norway Work Visa. This type of visa is issued to applicants who were lucky enough to land themselves an employment opportunity in Norway, making it a long-term visa.
• Norway Student Visa. This type of visa is issued to students who have been given admission to study in any Norwegian educational institution. Like the work visa, this is also a long-term visa.
• Norway Family Visa. This type is issued to the family members of Norwegian citizens or permanent resident holders.

General Visa Requirements

As earlier stated there are different types of visas and only your intention of traveling can determine the visa to apply for.

Therefore, no matter the reason for traveling to Norway, be it studies, business or work, you must apply for one of the types of visa.

Application form

This application form should be downloaded and filled correctly and truthfully, signed, and delivered personally upon completion to the embassy. Alternatively, you may choose to fill the visa electronically and then print out a hard copy.

International Passport

Your travel history is needed, and nothing shows your travel history as your passport and previous visas. It has to be valid for 3 months beyond the return date. At least two blank pages should be in your passport.

Passport Photograph

It must have two passport photographs attached to the document – a recent whole-face capture with a light background.

Flight Itinerary

A copy of your return-ticket reservation. Although, you are not to buy your ticket before getting your visa as it could be a waste of money if the visa application is rejected. The flight numbers that clearly state the entry and exit dates of your flight reservations are needed.

Civil Status

The applicant must have the marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse, ration card if applicable, and are to be submitted for proper documentation.

Travel Insurance

The confirmation of a minimum of 30,000 € coverage within Norway and the entire Schengen area will stand as the travel insurance.

Proof of Accommodation

The accommodation is expected to be sorted out as well, therefore proof is required. This accommodation should be for the whole trip.

Cover Letter

The cover letter is a letter that states the duration and purpose of visiting Norway. It also contains the itinerary.

Proof of Funds

Proof of financial capabilities for the period of stay in Norway.  Applicants whose intent is to go into Norway for one reason or the other must prove that they have 500 NOK that is equivalent to 53.34€. And can also prove that they can fund for themselves.

Documents To Submit According To The Employment Status

If employed:

• Employment contract
• 6 months of the bank statements of the company
• No-objection certificate from employer
• The Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary or Income Tax Return (ITR) form

If self-employed:

• A copy of your business license
• 6 months of the bank statements of the company
• Income Tax Return (ITR)

If a student:

• Proof of enrollment
• Leave approval letter from school or university

If retired:

• Pension statement of the latest 6 months

If applicable:

• 6 months of the bank statements that the property brings.

Note: The application form has to be signed and taken personally to the appropriate embassy/consulate or its representative in your home country alongside other important documents.

Aside from the general documentation that the embassy requests you may be asked to bring other important documents that relate to the purpose of your travel.

Documents That Are Strictly Related To The Types Of Visa

Norway Tourist/Visitor Visa:

• The invitation letter from whoever is inviting you over to Norway and the address of the person.
• Bank statement of the last 6 months
• Passport copies

Norway Visa for Business Purposes:

• The invitation letter of the company inviting you over, their address and proof that you have worked together in the past.
• Proof that your employer has granted you permission to come have your business dealings in Norway.
• Previous relationship trades between the two companies should be provided.
• 6 months of the bank statements of the company
• Memorandum and Article of Association in original certified copy (registered with joint-stock companies) Trade License (first issued and present renewal), Proprietorship/Partnership documents
• The applicant must show proof that they have their expenses taken care of. This should be in a letter given to the applicant by the company or the employer of the applicant. Without this, the applicant may not be granted entry.

Norway Visa for Medical Purposes:

• A local medical report
• Proof that a Norwegian hospital or doctor has requested your presence and also confirming the date of the appointment.
• Payment receipt of medical fees.
